About M2D2
The Massachusetts Medical Device Development Center (M2D2) at University of Massachusetts Lowell leverages the engineering, business and clinical strengths of the UMass campuses in Lowell and Worcester.
As well as offering incubator space, M2D2 provides fee-based services in the areas of business planning, product prototype development and clinical pathway assistance.
Shared lab challenges
Being a lab space and scientific instrument incubator for life science companies, M2D2 was facing issues coordinating the equipment and space reservations between multiple resident companies.
While a simple ‘walk in and use’ approach might have seemed the easiest, it would sometimes lead to clashing schedules and idle times due to lack of coordination. Being able to view the availability of equipment online before going into the lab became extremely important with lockdowns and social distancing measures put in place.
The results
While having considered different options to manage resources within their shared labs, M2D2 decided to implement Clustermarket's lab equipment booking system.
Clustermarket allowed them to schedule time slots to use the shared scientific instruments, gave the lab manager and resident companies a clear oversight of availability and helped increase the utilization of equipment.
In addition, the online equipment booking system offered a helpful solution to manage physical distancing by adding booking rules thus allowing only a certain number of people to be in a lab at any given time.
